What a special day it was for five Saint Charles College members of staff on Sunday, 11 June. That was, of course, when the Comrades Marathon was run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
The quintet took on the Ultimate Human Race and all of them finished, with just over 12 minutes separating the first and the last at the finish at Kingsmead in Durban.
Finishing times
Russell Powell (second from left, in photo) was the first of the Saints’ contingent to complete the race, clocking 10:32:52.
He was followed across the finishing line by Dean Riley (right, in photo) and Dean’s wife, Lauren (next to Dean), who was a race novice. Good man that he is, Dean accompanied Lauren on the road and she, in fact, crossed the line just one second ahead of him in a time of 10:39:49.
The last two Saints’ finishers, Rowan Irons (third, from left, and next to Saints’ Headmaster Allen van Blerk), and Divan van Wyk (left), stopped the clock in 10:44:58. They took on the challenge together.
“It was a great day, albeit very tough. It just doesn’t get easier,” said Irons, the Saint Charles College Director of Sport.
Now, there’s a way, a very extreme way, to set an example for the sportsmen of Saints! Well done to all.
