Northwood hosts a special rugby day for LIV

30 May 2023

Northwood recently welcomed a group of rugby-playing boys and their coach from LIV Village to the school for a special day that included a stadium tour of the Shark Tank and photos taken with Rugby World Cup winning captain, Siya Kolisi.

LIV Villages – LIV Village – Rescue a child, Restore a life, Raise a leader, Release a star. (liv-village.com) – are villages for orphaned and vulnerable children, which provide the children with trained foster mothers, schooling and life skills.

Shark Tank visit

Their day with Northwood began with a welcome from the school’s Headmaster, Paul Viljoen, and then it was off to the Shark Tank. There, they were shown the facility, exploring areas that are usually kept from the public. These included the gym, the change rooms and the tunnel which leads out onto the famous ground.

The Sharks players, heroes to many of the visiting group, welcomed the LIV Village group warmly, and Siya Kolisi, who is undergoing rehab after knee surgery, took time out of his recovery to greet every boy individually and took a group photo with them.

After a memorable morning, the group returned to Northwood where they were taken on a tour of the school. They were, then, treated to lunch by Durban North: Store – PizzaBoyz.

Conditioning and coaching

After a break, this was followed by a session with Northwood Head of Conditioning, Richard Tyler. Then, it was onto a session with top coaches, Jeremy McLaren, Jacques Deen, and Naseeb Abrahams.

The sessions were highlighted by some exciting athleticism shown by the boys and by the enthusiasm with which they embraced their opportunities.

The day was completed with the visitors watching Northwood’s senior sides practicing.

These are the kinds of initiatives that make a difference in people’s lives. For some, they serve as life-changing inspiration. Well done, Northwood!
