A fast start from Clifton set them up for a big 8-0 victory over Glenwood at the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday.

A first minute penalty corner was turned into a goal on the rebound by Kyle Thomas, and within three-and-a-half minutes of the first whistle it was 2-0, with the second goal also coming from a penalty corner.

A variation, it wasn’t clean, but the ball was scrambled over the line by Thomas Ehrich and Clifton were on their way.

It was, in fact, so comfortable for the hosts that they were able to rest their captain Connor McKenzie, who was recently named in the KZN Coastals under-18 A team, after he made a brief appearance in the first chukka.

Well organised

Glenwood tried manfully to stem the tide, but the boys in white were well organised and kept the Glenwood midfield in front of them with an effective press.

The visitors enjoyed a decent amount of possession, but too often their forward progress was slow as Clifton, moving well as a unit, effectively closed down the space.

Coach Keegan Pearce’s charges, in contrast, played more directly, and this put Glenwood under far greater pressure.

It was 3-0 after the first quarter, but Glenwood did well to keep Clifton out in the second chukka. The pressure, though, continued to ratchet up and the home team added a further five goals after half-time to take an expected victory.

It was a third win on the trot for Clifton, coming on the back of a 3-1 success at Saint Charles and a 1-0 victory at Saint Alban’s.
