On Wednesday afternoon, the boys and staff of Hilton College, and other members of the Hilton community, will take part in the Run for Richter campaign in honour of the late Tony Richter and his daughter Alice, who lost their lives in a tragic accident near Midmar Dam in February 2021.
Mr Richter was the Director of School Operations at Hilton at the time of his passing.
Through Sport for Lives, the Hilton Community is raising funds for the local non-profit organisation (NPO), Singakwenza – a particular favourite of Tony’s widow, Caro – which provides early childhood education in economically disadvantaged communities.

Singakwenza – https://www.singakwenza.co.za/ – means “We can do it!”, and that’s what Hilton College is calling on its community to do.
Singakwenza programs
The NPO supports a Learn @ Home program, which provides 720 children with their own activity boxes. These boxes contain carefully selected toys to help the children develop vital preschool skills.
Singakwenza also supports a Training & Mentorship Program, which empowers women and trains them on how to educate children in their care using resources made from recycling. The training takes place weekly for a minimum of two years.
In addition, Singakwenza Waste 2 Toys Workshops teach parents, practitioners and community workers how to make their own toys using recycling. Play is important, not how much toys cost, says Singakwenza.
A quote on the Singakwenza website, by the respected academic, Professor Jonathan Jansen, lauds the important work that the organisation is doing: “Singakwenza must be one of the most innovative and effective interventions in early childhood education in Southern Africa…”
