A late fightback brought Michaelhouse a four-point victory over DHS on Meadows on Saturday. Late comebacks have been a common theme of ‘House’s season.
They clawed their way back from 14 points down to draw with Helpmekaar, scored in the last minute to beat Maritzburg College, but left it a little too late to beat Hilton, although they could have settled for a draw.
It’s a dangerous route to victory, but it has revealed that this year’s Michaelhouse 1st XV is a team with great character. DHS is a very well-balanced side and to come away with a victory over the blue and gold, no matter how it is achieved, is a very good win.

Michaelhouse’s open age group teams showed their strength in depth that has been evident throughout the season, the under-16 age group was extremely tightly contested, while ‘House, after a one-point win by their u15 A team, dominated that age group. The biggest win of the day, though, belonged to the DHS u14 A side.

HOCKEY
The DHS 1st XI was in superb form against Michaelhouse in Balgowan, scoring some fantastic goals to come away with a 5-0 victory over the red and whites.
Approach play and pretty passing has not been an issue for Michael Baker’s charges this season, but finishing has. The problem that lay in wait for their opposition was when DHS started putting the finishing touches on their flowing passing. Unluckily for Michaelhouse, they were the opposition on the day that the Durban boys clicked.
Lumi Matwele began the season running in midfield for the Horseflies, and he was a dominant player for them there. However, in search of goals, coach Baker moved him up front towards the end of the Hibbert Cup in Port Elizabeth. It helped bring DHS five goals against Clifton there, and now, after another five-goal haul, it appears safe to say the move has been an astute one.
It was Matwele who got the ball rolling for the visitors with a clever finish after a quick counter, and Matwele was again involved, moving the ball swiftly upfield in combination with Lerou Dithlakanyane, to set up a second goal for DHS.
Not done, Matwele provided a smart reverse stick finish to put the Blue Typhoon up 3-0. Then, from a penalty corner variation, he fired the ball powerfully into the top of the Michaelhouse net with a superb drag flick.
Chasing the game, Michaelhouse were caught high in the last minute, with DHS completing the scoring in the final seconds of the match.
Now that they’ve found their goal-scoring mojo, captain Dithlakanyane and his men are going to be a big problem for any opposition. They’re also a team that one needs to see in action. They’re playing fantastic hockey.
Meanwhile, the DHS under-16 A team continued a season that has been every bit as impressive, if not even more impressive, than their 1st team. They, too, were 5-0 winners.
