RUGBY
The Maritzburg College 1st XV delivered a strong performance on Reunion to prevent a dangerous Westville outfit from getting into the game on Goldstone’s, which was surrounded by a fantastic crowd.
(Apologies to Westville for not including their try in the highlights package, but the broadcaster chose to show an advert at that time!)
Four tries to one was the final tally, and College left some points on the table as their goal-kicking on the day was wayward. Besides that, though, they showed that they have evolved and improved throughout the 2023 season. They are a team without any noticeable weaknesses, but some very impressive strengths.

It was a tough day for Westville rugby teams, but their under-16A side was slightly disappointed to share a 26-26 draw with College. That was their third draw of the season! Previously, in two matches in a row at Jeppe’s Tony de Munnik Festival, they drew 17-17 with Grey High and 22-22 with Monument, both schools with a strong rugby tradition.
College, though, demonstrated that they had rich depth throughout their age groups, especially in the lower teams. Their D teams, for example, won three out of three matches, scoring 140 points while conceding none.

HOCKEY
The Maritzburg College and Westville 1st XIs played to an entertaining 2-2 draw, and both teams had opportunities to add to their two-goal tallies. At the end, Westville came close to sneaking a win in the last 30 seconds, but College ‘keeper Nick Holmes rose to the challenge to keep the Griffins out.

The hosts held the edge in the remainder of the open age group matches, while the under-16 age group, much like it was on the rugby fields, was very competitive. The biggest win of the day, though, went the way of the Westville under-14 B team.
