In the lead-up to their visit to Saint Alban’s College in Pretoria, Clifton College Director of Sport, Mike Howieson, speaking on the new “Clifton in Conversation” podcast – https://www.pinnacle-schools.com/2023/05/12/clifton-in-conversation/ – suggested that travelling up to the Highveld comes with a penalty, theoretically, of about 15 points.
That was an interesting take on matters because, on Saturday, Saint Alban’s came away with a 12-point victory over Clifton, winning 22-10. All of which goes to suggest that the result might have been different in Durban. The record books, though, will reflect a win for Saints.
The home team, objectively, deserved the victory. Clifton’s sole try came from a quick turnover and breakaway when they blocked an attempted grubber by Saints, regathered and struck quickly. However, there were only five points in it until the last minute when Saint Alban’s went over for a converted try to secure the win.
In the younger age groups, under-15 and under-14, Clifton showed there is good talent coming through their ranks, winning all four of their matches.

HOCKEY
The Clifton 1st XI faced a Saint Alban’s College team that had earlier in the season shared the same stage as them at the Coastal Cup, played at the Riverside Sports Club. The two teams hadn’t met then, but it was clear that a serious examination awaited Connor McKenzie and his side.
Fresh off of a 3-1 win over Saint Charles, Keegan Pearce’s charges again came away with the W. This time it was tighter, but a special goal sealed the deal for the boys from Durban.
