Introducing the “Clifton in Conversation” podcast

12 May 2023

If, like me, you enjoy podcasts, here’s something to look out for: “Clifton in Conversation”, hosted by the school’s Deputy Principal: Marketing, Barry Mezher.

I’ve spoken with many schools who have been toying with the idea of the podcast. Think about it for a moment: there are so many interesting options to talk about, and so much insight that others might appreciate, and now Clifton has gone and taken that step.

The “Clifton in Conversation” Podcast is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. You can find it at:

In the first episode, Barry Mezher outlines what to expect: “The Podcast that takes you inside the heart of Clifton School… This podcast brings you fascinating interviews and thought-provoking conversations with members of the Clifton community.

“From the Executive Headmaster to the students themselves, we’ll explore the diverse perspectives and experiences that make Clifton such a unique and special place. Join us as we delve into the stories, insights and ideas that shape Clifton’s vibrant community.”

First up, the podcast discusses a current hot topic, the Saint Alban’s Winter Derby Exchange 2023, with Mike Howieson (Director of Sport) and Grant Bell (Director of Rugby), ahead of Clifton’s trip up to Pretoria to test themselves against Saints on 13 May.

The introduction and evolution of the winter derbies are discussed and the different challenges that the derbies bring against opposition from outside of the KZN boundaries.

The conversation also reveals what makes the derby exchanges special and how much of a bonding experience they provide, not just among the Clifton boys themselves, but also with the families of boys that accommodate the Clifton boys.

If you want to get a feel for the school, a feel for the experiences it offers, and some insight into the personalities who make Clifton the special school that it is, this new podcast shows real promise.
