Durban High School (DHS), Glenwood High and Maritzburg College flew the KZN flag at the 2023 Absa Wildeklawer Festival in Kimberley, with all three schools’ rugby teams competing in the under 14A, under-15A, under-16A and 1st XV events.
They all showed that rugby in KZN is in a healthy state, and the DHS 1st XV produced the most enthralling rugby of the entire weekend in their thrilling 64-17 dismantling of HTS Drostdy.

For context, in their previous five matches, Drostdy had not conceded more than 23 points. They had gone down 6-13 to Paarl Boys’ High, a noted rugby powerhouse, but nothing had prepared them for the free-flowing DHS game.
The DHS under-14A side, meanwhile, grabbed an exciting 26-24 win over Paul Roos.
The Glenwood 1st XV scored the winning points with the last kick of their game against Welkom Gimnasium, with an unusual, very alert play from Jaco Williams proving to be the difference between a win and a loss, while their under-14 side scored a convincing 15-point win over Hoërskool Nelspruit.

Starting without the majority of the first choice 15, the Maritzburg College 1st side, nonetheless, did enough to defeat Framesby, while the College under-16s and under-15s scored memorable, hard-fought wins over Stellenberg.

Coincidently, the coming weekend’s derbies include College against Glenwood. Much will depend on how well those teams recover from their exertions in the Absa Wildeklawer Festival.
