Westville Boys’ High hockey and rugby teams travelled to Gqeberha over the long weekend to test their skills in the Hibbert Shield and Grey High Rugby Festival respectively. Meanwhile, the 2nd hockey team was in action at the Reddam House Umhlanga Festival of Hockey.
Hockey
In the Eastern Cape, the 1st hockey team was forced to play without a number of key players due to injuries, concussion and illness. They remained competitive, however, and matched up well against some of the top teams in the country.

For the under-16s, it was an up-and-down event, with their results varying wildly.
Meanwhile, the WBHS 2nd XI contested the Reddam House Umhlanga Festival of Hockey, competing against other schools’ 1st teams, and did themselves proud, reaching the final of both the field hockey and indoor hockey events.
Rugby
On Thursday, the 1st rugby side defeated Voortrekker Bethlehem in their opening match at the Grey High Festival and we spoke with coach Njabulo “Jabz” Zulu afterwards.

Then, in the main game on the final day, they lost to Grey High in dramatic fashion. But they also scored one of the best tries of this season to take a late lead in that game.

The under-14 A team battled Queen’s College and Grey High in two hard-fought matches, coming away with one win and one loss.
