Kearsney College visited Northwood on Saturday, 29 April, for a big sports’ programme of 18 rugby and 13 hockey matches. In the day’s two 1st team clashes, Northwood would have been favoured on the Astro, while the rugby game was hard to call.
Rugby
A low-scoring 1st XV clash reflected the gritty defensive fight that the Northwood and Kearsney 1st teams have demonstrated throughout 2023. And, in fact, it was a tackle that proved pivotal in the Knights’ win.

Kearsney came back into the game with an outstanding try from a clever kick, but the home side kept their noses in front until the end.

Competition in the open age group was tight, with both schools winning three matches. Northwood, though, enjoyed a clean sweep of the under-16 and under-15 games, with the under-16A clash being particularly hard-fought.
Kearsney enjoyed a win in the under-14A game, while the remainder of that age group’s matches were decided by seven points or less.

Hockey
Kearsney’s 1st hockey team has had mixed results in 2023, producing inconsistent performances. Northwood, by contrast, have enjoyed a strong season, with a 0-1 defeat to DHS in a high-quality showdown, a rare setback for a side that has not only been good at scoring goals, but also, even moreso, at keeping them out.

Thus, a 1-1 draw on Saturday was a better result for the Botha’s Hill boys than it was for the Knights, although the home team were delighted to find an equaliser in the last 30 seconds of the contest.

Northwood, though, enjoyed the better of the battles in the under-16 and under-14 age groups, with the under-16 games, especially, proving to be very entertaining, with 24 goals being scored in five matches.
