HOCKEY
At the conclusion of the hockey programme on Saturday, 25 March, Durban High School had won five matches, Maritzburg College had won five, and two had been drawn, but hidden within that record was something that DHS had possibly never before achieved: victories in the 1st, under-16A and under-14 A matches.
(Going back in time, that would previously have been 1st, under-15A and under-14A).
It was an important achievement for DHS against its great rival, which for so long has been dominant on the hockey fields, where it has established itself as one of South Africa’s leading hockey playing schools. College hockey remains strong, but DHS has now established itself as one of the best, too.
Also, managing that feat on the new Blue and Gold AstroTurf would have made Saturday’s success taste that little bit sweeter. What an asset it is proving to be!

RUGBY
Saturday’s overall rugby record made for interesting reading, with Maritzburg College recording 13 wins to the six of DHS. The schools also shared an absorbing draw in the 2nd team game, but one imagines it will be DHS feeling better about the outcome of the day. That’s because four of the Blue Typhoon’s victories were achieved in the showpiece matches: 1st XV, under-16A, under-15A and under-14A.
The closest of them was the 1st XV game, with Maritzburg College having their chances to pull out a draw after laying siege to the DHS try-line late in the contest. Tigerish defence, however, kept them out and the hosts celebrated putting the cherry on the top of a list of results that have rarely, if ever, been achieved against College in the main games.
The visitors, though, clearly established their superiority in depth. The further the matches moved down the ranks, the bigger the victories College scored. Yet, that lack of A team success will sting for a while.
