Glenwood welcomed Westville Boys’ High to Durban on Saturday, 18 March, for the first winter derby day for both schools of 2023. While they traded victories on the rugby fields, it was Westville’s day in the hockey matches.
RUGBY
With home ground advantage in their favour, the Green Machine had a score to settle with Westville. The Griffin had twice downed Glenwood in 2022, winning 19-12 at the beginning of March and then beating Glenwood 22-7 at the beginning of May. In recent years, Glenwood hasn’t often suffered consecutive reversals against KwaZulu-Natal opposition.
On Saturday, they came away with the desired victory, just. It was as tight as it could possibly be, with the Green Machine sneaking in by one point, 25-24, in the main game of the day.
Most of the rugby matches were closely contested affairs, and there were no sweeps for either of the schools in the various age groups.
All of the A team clashes were very hard-fought battles, with Glenwood winning the under-14A game by 14 points and the under-15 A match by a single point. Westville took the under-16A honours by nine points.

HOCKEY
A week earlier, before Saturday’s meeting on the 3 Schools Astro, the Westville 1st XI had looked like one of the better teams on show when the 10 top KZN boys’ schools participated in a full day of pre-season, non-cap matches at DHS. They had played a well-structured game with assurance and patience.
Glenwood, meanwhile, had endured a difficult outing against Maritzburg College. Would that perceived difference show up on Saturday? It did.
Westville proved they were a step ahead of Glenwood this early in the season, claiming a 4-0 victory.
That dominance held through the age groups, as Westville came away with a perfect record of eight wins in eight matches against their Durban rivals. Director of Hockey Cameron Mackay has propelled Westville to a lot of success under his watch and it appears there is plenty more to come from his charges.
