BASKETBALL

Two of the best teams in the country met when the Saint Charles College and Maritzburg College 1st basketball teams went at it on Saturday. Saint Charles, after winning the Saint John’s basketball title, had laid claim to being the best team in South Africa and they lived up to their billing to hold off a stern examination from College, coming away with a nine-point victory.

In the remaining fixtures, however, Maritzburg College enjoyed a very strong showing, dropping only two games at under-15 level while winning the rest, including many tight contests.

Rain, unfortunately, affected many matches on Saturday. When the 1st team game was called off it was at an interesting juncture, where it was difficult to determine who had the advantage. It could have gone either way.

The match of the day was the under-14 B game, which ended with a narrow win for Saints. They also appeared to be in good position to win the under-15 A match before rain put paid to that ambition, but Maritzburg College finished with four wins to the two of Saint Charles on the day.
