The swimming season concluded on Wednesday evening with the KZN Schools Top 9 Gala taking place at the Kings Park Complex.

During the course of the season, two schools had separated themselves from the competition, and this was, again, the case as Westville Boys’ High and Durban High School (DHS) finished one-two and well clear of the rest of the teams.

Westville tallied 200 points, with DHS ending on 181. Once again, the DHS under-17 team proved to be the best in their age group, winning four of the five events, but, as has been the case for many years now, Westville won through the quantity of their quality.

DHS, though, managed one of the highlights of the evening, winning the five-age freestyle relay.

The KZN Top 9 Gala confirmed Westville and DHS as the class of KZN in the pool in 2023.
The KZN Top 8 Gala confirmed Westville and DHS as the class of KZN in the pool in 2023.

Unpredictable

Behind the two front-runners, the results were far less predictable. Clifton, who had finished on the bottom rung in the Nestor Pierides Gala, had improved to fourth (out of six) in the recent Durban and Districts Gala, and now, this time, they came home in third, comfortably ahead of fourth-placed Maritzburg College. At the Nestor Pierides Gala, College had more than doubled Clifton’s points’ total.

Clifton tallied 121 points and College 109. Hilton College, a bit of an unknown until this point in the season, secured fifth, edging out Northwood by just two points, 101 to 99.

Glenwood, on 64, followed next, 20 points clear of Kearsney College, who, in the two previous galas had finished comfortably clear of the Green Machine.
