Cleaning up the Beachwood Mangroves with Northwood, 24 February 2023.

1 March 2023

On Friday, 24 February, a group of 75 Northwood Squires, led by the experts at Adopt a River Eco Solutions, a registered non-profit working in the river and environmental space, helped to beautify the Beachwood Mangroves.

Litter has been a problem at the Blue Lagoon/Umngeni River Mouth, but the Northwood boys offered up their time and hard work to help remedy that problem.

They removed a wide variety of refuse that included plastic bags, glass bottles, plastic bottles, polystyrene, tyres, footwear, and even geysers!

It was hot and humid, but the Northwood boys enthusiastically tackled the task of cleaning up the Beachwood Mangroves.
It was hot and humid, but the Northwood boys enthusiastically tackled the task of cleaning up the Beachwood Mangroves.

The clean-up effort was initiated when Northwood contacted Adopt a River Eco Solutions after Headmaster Paul Viljoen and maths’ teacher Morgan Hosking discussed how the school’s boys could become more involved in environmental projects late in 2022.

Not only was the clean-up a way in which to improve the environment, but it also served as a practical method of exposing the students to the serious problems the environment faces. Crucially, it showed them that they were able to make a difference.

The Beachwood Mangroves should be treasured and enjoyed by the public. Indeed, they’re open to all on the third Saturday of every month. Now, thanks to the Northwood boys there’s much more to enjoy and appreciate about them.

Great job, Squires!
