The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) recognised Clifton’s consistent, valuable donations to the vital service at a function hosted by the SANBS on the weekend.
A group of Clifton boys were accompanied by teacher Yolande Nell to the event. There, the peer promoters received a small gift from the SANBS, and also peer promoter badges.
Clifton hosts a blood donor clinic every term. Only one percent of South Africans are active blood donors, and schools play a vital role in ensuring the SANBS has enough blood to serve those in need. Blood stocks usually cover not more than five days, which is the level that the SANBS requires to sustain availability for patients who require the life-giving liquid.
At the time of writing, the organisation had five days of B-positive stock, but only 3.1 days of O-positive available.
Up to three people’s lives can be saved from a single blood donation.
