A very busy weekend of sports’ action began for Kearsney College in Johannesburg and Pretoria, with the school’s 1st and under-15 A basketball teams contesting the Saint John’s Basketball Tournament in Joburg, and the 1st XI playing in the Independent Schools Cricket Festival in Pretoria.
Unfortunately for the two 1st teams, the weekend didn’t start out well. The basketball boys suffered a narrow loss to Saint John’s, going down by four points, while SA Colts’ spinner, Letlotlo Likhi of Saint Andrew’s, undid Kearsney’s top batsmen, capturing 5 for 17, as the Bloemfontein school ended Kearsney’s unbeaten start to the season after bowling the Botha’s Hill bunch out for 88.

On Saturday, Kearsney’s 1st basketball team, which had lost only to Saint Charles in the recent Jenny Orchard Invitational, came roaring back with a vengeance to pick up three wins in succession. The 1st XI, unfortunately, suffered a horrible hangover from their first loss of the season the previous day and were soundly thumped by Saint Stithian’s.

Saturday saw Kearsney tackle neighbours Westville Boys’ High in basketball, cricket, and water polo. In the open age groups, Kearsney rocked in the basketball, but Westville’s under-16s held the edge over their opposition. It was tight in the under-15 age group, but tilted in Kearsney’s favour, while they also came out ahead in the under-14 clashes.
In Johannesburg, Kearsney added another win to their run of successes, but Saint Charles College finally ended Kearsney’s designs on the title.
On the cricket field, the Kearsney 1st XI righted the ship at the Independent Schools Festival, outplaying the hosts, Saint Alban’s College, while locally the competition was tight against Westville, excepting for the under-16 A match, which went very decisively in favour of Westville.
Westville enjoyed the better of the open water polo matches, while Kearsney’s under-15 team, in festival action, gave a good account of themselves against top opposition.

A loss to Saint Benedict’s College was a bit of a damper for Kearsney at the end of the Saint John’s Basketball Tournament, but the 1st XI claimed another win, this time over Cornwall Hill College.
