Clifton’s Interact Club paid a visit to the Makabongwe Pre-School on Valentine’s Day. It’s a tradition that has been happening for over a decade now.
The Pre-School, which is based near the Central Fire Station, has a compelling origin story. It was started in 1995 by two women, who believed that no child should be illiterate. It has since become a fantastic success.
From beginning with 15 children sitting on pieces of cardboard on the pavements, it now has classrooms invitingly decorated with colourful posters and artwork. Today, it has 193 children, who also have access to a playground and a dedicated staff. Among other things, the children also participate in drama, music, art and baking.
Clifton’s visiting party played with the Makabongwe children, heard songs from them, and shared in a fun time while spreading the love and goodwill around. The Clifton group included the school’s exchange students and teachers from the United States.
