One of the advantages of Northwood is the school’s proximity to the Beachwood Mangroves, which is where the Northwood grade 8 boys headed recently to learn about the mangroves’ ecosystem.

There, they undertook a random sampling investigation to estimate the size of various animal species in the reserve.

While the mangroves appeared relatively unharmed by man, sadly, in the case of beaches, litter was all too common a sight.

The data they gathered will be compared to samples taken 20 years previously. At the core of their analysis will be whether or not humans have negatively affected the ecosystem and the size of the animal populations.

The exercise includes using a combination of mathematics, geography, technology, life sciences, art and English, for the data collection and analysis. It reveals a simple, practical demonstration of how different subjects can be incorporated to work together.
