The inaugural Betway SA20 cricket competition, a runaway success, reached its pinnacle on Sunday, with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape defeating the Pretoria Capitals by four wickets to lift the title. For one of the Pretoria Capitals’ players, Hilton College old boy Eathan Bosch, there was reason to celebrate, however.

Bosch, who matriculated in 2016, was named the 2023 Rising Star, which goes to a South African cricketer, aged 25 or younger, who accumulated the most points during the tournament.

He finished as the fourth-leading wicket-taker, dismissing 15 batsmen at an average of 21.40, and an economy rate of 8.03 runs per over.

He, furthermore, contributed 90 runs with the bat, scoring at a rate of 125 per 100 balls faced.

Cricketing family

His brother, Corbin, who was part of the South African under-19 team that won the World Cup in 2014, turned out for the Paarl Royals.

The brothers’ late father, Tertius, was a fast bowler who represented South Africa against the West Indies in 1992, shortly after the country returned from international isolation.

Interestingly, while in matric, Eathan admitted he preferred batting to bowling, but recognised that his main job was bowling. It seems that some things have not changed since his days at Hilton.
