(See fixtures below)

Michaelhouse and Maritzburg College met on the squash court this week, in a clash of two schools which are, traditionally, the squash leaders in the midlands.

The showdown took place at Michaelhouse and the home side enjoyed an excellent outing, winning 18 out of the 21 matches contested.

Both teams will participate in the prestigious, long-running Saints Squash Festival supported by Standard Bank from 9-12 February. The event, hosted by Saint Andrew’s School, Bloemfontein, brings together 25 of the country’s leading squash-playing schools, and 26 teams in total.

The KwaZulu-Natal contingent includes Michaelhouse, Maritzburg College, Kearsney College, Glenwood Boys’ High and Westville Boys’ High.

They’ll face, among others, Saint Andrew’s School (Bloemfontein, two teams), Saint Andrew’s College (Grahamstown), Grey College (Bloemfontein), Paul Roos Gimnasium (Paarl), Queen’s College (Queenstown), Grey High School (Gqeberha), Zwartkops (Pretoria), Parktown Boys’ High (Johannesburg), Saint Stithians College (Johannesburg), Saint John’s College (Johannesburg), Saint Dominic’s College (Welkom), Selborne College (East London), Kingswood College (Grahamstown), Pretoria Boys’ High (Pretoria), King Edward VII (Johannesburg), and also players from Witteberg High (Bethlehem) and Welkom Gimnasium.

The country’s leading junior players will be in action and while the event is run as a festival, with no winners being declared or silverware being contested, the results are always eagerly viewed to see where the balance of power in South African schoolboys’ squash lies.

Matches will be played in various venues around the city, including St Andrew’s School, Eunice High School, Grey College, Ramblers, Municipals, Oudstudente, Tempe, the University of the Free State, Bobbiespark and St Michael’s School.
