Clifton welcomed Glenwood to the Riverside Sports Club on Saturday, 4 February, for a 50-over-a-side clash. The visitors, who won the toss and chose to bat, lost an early wicket, but their stand for the second wicket proved to be the pivotal partnership in the match.
Captain Nethan Moodley and Slade Lock joined forces to put Clifton on the back foot. Moodley, the more aggressive of the two, struck 42 off of 47 balls, with five fours and a six, while Lock’s innings of 58 lasted 95 balls and included three fours and one maximum.
Both batsman fell to Shadzaad Perumal, caught and bowled. Perumal was also involved in the run out of Bandile Mbatha for 15, and he then, incredibly, executed a third caught and bowled to send Ciaran Roundtree back to the changing room for 22.
Impetus
Cameron Laing, though, provided the innings with some impetus, striking 33 from only 28 deliveries, with three fours and two sixes before he was run out by Clifton captain Camden Riley.
Right at the end of their knock, Glenwood received a further boost when Kyle Bryan, in at 10, smashed a quickfire 22 from 13 balls, with two fours and a six. That helped the visitors to 210 for 9 in their 50 overs.
Shahzaad Perumal led the Clifton attack, picking up 3 for 32 in his 10 overs of left-arm spin, but no other bowler removed more than one batsman.
Clifton’s reply
Clifton started their reply slowly but steadily, with the opening pair putting on 34 for the first wicket before Ben McElligot was sharply caught at first slip off of the bowling of left-arm spinner Sibonelo Phewa for 18.
Shahzaad Perumal, who enjoyed a good all-round game for Clifton, helped advance the total to 66 before he was dismissed. He, too, was a victim of left-arm spin, but this time the method of dismissal was a stumping as he danced down the wicket but failed to make contact with a wide delivery. He made 29, with two fours, which would end up being the highest score of Clifton’s innings.
Joseph Ray contributed a solid 27, but only one more batsman made it into the twenties as Glenwood’s bowlers made regular inroads into the hosts’ batting order.
After 43.2 overs the innings was over, with Clifton all out for 142, leaving Glenwood the victors by 68 runs.
Sibonelo Phewa captured 3 for 28 in 10 overs to lead the Glenwood bowling attack. Nethan Moodley snared 2 for 8, Ciaran Roundtree snapped up 2 for 17, and Slade Lock returned figures of 2 for 17.
