Westville’s 1st basketball team travelled to Johannesburg on the weekend of 28 January to test their skills in the American International School of Johannesburg Basketball Tournament. It proved to be a fruitful experience.
Facing HeronBridge College in their opener, Westville romped to a 45-9 win. They followed that up with a tough 23-17 victory over Sacred Heart College. Next up was Crawford, whom Westville brushed aside 56-9.
Saint Benedict’s, traditionally a strong basketball school, then handed the Griffin a 24-32 defeat. In their last round-robin outing, Westville fell 21-37 to Saint John’s College, also always one of Johannesburg’s best.
Those results meant the Griffin would take on Michael Mount Waldorf in the quarterfinals. After a fantastic battle, Westville came away 26-22 victors.
In the final four, Westville, once again, faced Saint Benedict’s. They couldn’t quite crack the puzzle posed by Bennies in the rematch and went down 23-35 after a good fight.
Playing off for third and fourth, Westville had to settle for an encouraging fourth, with Saint David’s taking the honours 48-30 in that clash.
