Hilton College welcomed internationally-recognised South African artists Nandipha Mntambo, Blessing Ngobeni, Bambo Sibiya and Mbali Tshabalala to the school’s campus on Wednesday.

They were joined by 160 pupils in grades 11 and 12 from 12 Pietermaritzburg and Midlands-based IEB schools: Epworth, Grace College, Michaelhouse, St John’s Diocesan School for Girls, St Nicholas Diocesan School, St Anne’s College, St. Patrick’s, Treverton College, Deutsche Schule Hermannsburg, Kearsney College and The Wykeham Collegiate.

Visual Arts teacher Brighton Nkomo conceived the event, the “Artist in the Classroom Workshop”, which was then organised by Angela Salamon, the Head of Visual Arts at Hilton College.

Mntambo (photography and sculpture), Ngobeni (collage artist), Sibiya (printmaking, acrylic and charcoal artist) and Tshabalala (mixed media artist) provided artistic inspiration to the learners by sharing their art practice and demonstrating how they create their works.

Then, to wrap up the day, the quartet took part in a question-and-answer session to further inspire and educate the pupils.

“It was a phenomenal day, and the artists really brought their magic to life. The pupils asked so many questions and were thoroughly involved in the experience,” Angela Salamon commented. “We may well be doing this again next year.”

It’s heart-warming to observe schools working together for the benefit of the children and the wider community. Well done, Hilton College!
