Durban High School’s Daniel Kreuzer was one of KwaZulu-Natal’s top performers in the 2022 matric final exams, recording nine distinctions to emulate his brother, Mikail, who achieved a similar feat in 2021. His results included 94 percent for Mathematics and 96 percent for German.
Daniel said his brother had inspired him to excel, even though Daniel has two learning disabilities. As a result of dysgraphia, which is characterised by writing difficulties – his writing is slow and large, Daniel explained – he was granted an extra 10 minutes for each hour of the allotted exam times.
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) impacted his studying. If he didn’t listen to music, Daniel said, he would get distracted. However, by plugging headphones into a computer he was attached to it and couldn’t move around.
“A lot of good” DHS teachers
Besides his supportive brother and family, many of whom are medical practitioners, Daniel said he was assisted tremendously by “a lot of good” DHS teachers.
While Mikail and others in the family are in the medical field, Daniel is planning on breaking the mould. He wants to study mechatronics at the University of Cape Town.
The overall pass rate for DHS was 97.1 percent, with 93.56 percent of the boys receiving tertiary acceptance, while 82.45 percent recorded Bachelor’s Passes.
