Westville visited Pietermaritzburg on Saturday for a showdown in the pool with Maritzburg College, as the two schools did water polo battle in extremely hot conditions, which would have made the prospect of taking to the water a very inviting one for the players.
The honours in the day’s big game, the clash of the 1st teams, went the way of Westville, who had enjoyed an excellent 2022, and had been, alongside Clifton, the leading team in KwaZulu-Natal.
Their victory was built upon a blistering start, which saw the visitors race into a 4-0 lead in no time at all. College boys, though, are known for their fighting spirit and the home team finally found a reply, which set them on their way to making a better contest of the clash.
In the end, though, Westville had the answers to the challenge that College posed, and they went on to a comfortable 19-9 win.
In fact, the visitors went a perfect five out of five in open age group clashes, but College ruled the under-15 roost with two clear-cut victories.
At under-14 level, Westville’s A team picked up the biggest win of the day by an 18-6 margin, but in the showdown between the two B teams, the honours were shared.
